Learn Active is a registered charity that provides outdoor education opportunities to people with intellectual disabilities.

Our mission is to enable people with intellectual disabilities to explore and have fun in the outdoors while creating and achieving their goals, learning new skills & building friendships.

Karla Roberts – Managing directorkarla pic
Karla Roberts is the managing director of Learn Active. She holds a number of professional qualifications and has extensive experience working with people with disabilities in outdoor education. She started Learn Active as an extension to the Duke of Edinburgh award she was running at a special school and has developed Learn Active into a full time, sustainable organisation.

Qualifications gained: Diploma in Recreational Leadership, Diploma in Adventure Guiding and Instructing, NZOIA Rock 1, NZOIA Bush 1, National Raft Guide Grade 2

 

Alex Poetschke – Lead Instructor alex profile
Alex has over ten years’ experience working with people with disabilities, including time as a Speech-Language Therapist and as an Instructor in a variety of sport and outdoor pursuits. Alex’s passion is to support people with disabilities to connect with the land, their communities, and themselves

Qualifications gained: Honours BA in Kinesiology (i.e sport science); Master of Speech Pathology Studies, NZOIA Bush 1, Wilderness First Responder, Avalanche Operations Level 1.

Cailin has grown up exploring the outdoors and understands the benefits of spending time in outdoor environments. And as a recent graduate is ready to enable others to have awesome experiences in the outdoors to. Cailin is also passionate about sustainability, caring for the environment and reducing the impact on the planet.

Qualifications gained: Bachelor of Sustainability and Outdoor Education, NZOIA bush leader, NZOIA kayak leader
 
 

Lois Hill- Part time Instructor        IMG-20190929-WA0022                                                                                      As an occupational therapist with ten years’ experience working in a range of settings, Lois has facilitated clients to engage in activity for wellbeing and independence. Outside of work, adventure sports and connecting with nature is a hugely important part of her life and wellbeing. Wanting to bring together two of her passions in life – helping people and connecting with nature – has bought her to a role at Learn Active.

Qualifications gained: Bachelor of science in Occupational Therapy

 

Shannan Pauling – Instructor/disability supportshannan                                                      

Shannan has been working with people in the disability sector for over 8 years, largely focused on group based programmes built around goal achievement and wellbeing. Her passion for the environment and its relationship to health, coupled with a background in multiple outdoor pursuits, has brought her to explore the possibilities here at Learn Active.

Qualifications gained: Level 4 Health and Wellbeing – Community Facilitation, Certificate in Outdoor Recreation, PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor
